Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College men’s soccer team was able to get the proverbial monkey off of their back on Tuesday by picking up their first win of the season. The Tornados defeated Tusculum College 4-3 after a long fought battle on the BC Soccer Field. The Tornados improved their record to 1-8-1 and 1-3-0 in SAC play with their win over the Pioneers.
The scoring started early in the match when Brevard was awarded a penalty kick in the 8th minute of play. Renato Barbosa (Vinhedo, Brazil) was able to beat the Pioneer’s keeper giving Brevard an early 1-0 lead. It was Barbosa’s first goal of the season.
Just over four minutes after Barbosa’s goal Tusculum return-fired with a goal of their own nodding things up at 1-1 when Petr Buzyan was able to get one by Jack Shaw (Simpsonville, S.C.) at the 12:32 mark. Buzyan’s goal came off of a pass from Dean Hopewell. It only took another four minutes following Buzyan’s goal for the Pioneers to strike again. Javier Portillo dribbled the ball from Tusculum’s defensive end up the middle and took a shot from 10 yards outside the box to give Tusculum a 2-1 edge.
It looked as though Brevard was going to be headed into halftime trailing 2-1, but in the 33rd minute Jami Uuttu (Naantali, Finland) took a shot which ricochet off of the keeper leaving the goal wide open for Andrew Gallowitch (Monroe, N.C.) who netted his first career goal for Brevard College tying it up at two goals a piece. That wasn’t the last the net would see of Gallowitch.
The second half started out all nodded-up at two, but just four minutes into the half Gallowitch struck again. Jaime Villacis (Miami, Fla.) crossed the ball from inside the box and Gallowitch came sliding into kick the ball past the keeper into the back of the net for his second goal of the match. His second goal gave Brevard a 3-2 lead at the 49:16 mark.
However, Tusculum was able to claw back and scored a third goal to even things up yet again when Curtis Berger was able to net one in the 60th minute making it 3-3.
In the 79th minute Brevard was deep in Tusculum’s end and Villacis took a shot but the keeper was up to the task. Gallowitch, however was there to clean up the box netting his third goal of the match good for his first career hat-trick. His third goal gave BC the 4-3 lead which was enough to hold up as the final.
The Torandos are back in action on Friday evening when they travel to Mars Hill College. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mars Hill.
