Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College men’s soccer team defeated the Wolves of Newberry 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Brevard College Soccer Field. The Tornados now move to 2-12-1 on the season and 2-6-0 in South Atlantic Conference match-ups this year.
Despite falling behind in the first four minutes of play when Nathan Arroyo took a chip pass from Joao Delgado and beat the Brevard keeper at 3:45, Brevard was undeterred as they were able to rally for two goals and defeat Newberry.
Henri Erti (Kangasala, Finland) opened up the scoring for Brevard by taking a shot outside the right-hand side of the box. His shot traveled across the box and tipped off of a defender and into the net to tie up the match at 24:35. It was Erti’s first goal of the season.
The score remained tied heading into half-time but it didn’t take long for the Tornados to strike again in the second half.
After just 5:21 into the second half, Jaime Villacis (Miami, Fla.) was able to beat the Newberry keeper and give Brevard a 2-1 edge. Villacis took a pass from junior captain Scott Schuurman (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and was able to take a shot inside the box that beat the goalie on the short side of the net. It was the second goal of the season for Villacis and the first assist of the year for Schuurman. The Villacis goal gave Brevard the lead as they were able to hold on to the win.
Jack Shaw (Simpsonville, S.C.) made the start in net but was replaced by Pauli Jussila (Valkeakoski, Finland) at the 47:37 mark when Shaw was injured after making a save and hitting the post.
The Brevard men play their final home match of the season on Monday, October 25th. They play host to the Queens College Royals, with kick-off at 4 p.m. on the Brevard College Soccer Field.
