Wingate, N.C. - Angela Canale became the second BC women's cross country runner in Brevard's recent history in the NCAA Division II to place in the top seven at the 2010 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championships, finishing fifth overall, in receiving First Team All-SAC and All-SAC Freshman team honors this morning in Wingate, N.C.

Both the BC men's and the women's cross country teams took the field at the meet, competing against runners from all participating SAC institutions.

The women finished eighth overall as a team, led by Canale as the freshman finished fifth place overall out of the 77-woman field, crossing the finish line in 19:31 in the 5,000-meter race. Olivia Fawcett was the next quickest to cross the finish line for Brevard. Fawcett crossed in a time of 22:23 which was good for 38th place. Danielle Messer finished with a time of 23:27, while Ariel Muiselaar crossed two seconds later at 23:29. Melissa Schmidt finished with a time of 23:56 and Grace Skiles covered the course in 24:16. Liza Fortenberry was able to complete the race in 28:37. Anderson University’s Whitney Bishoff took the women’s race with a time of 18:10, while the Trojans took the event as a team as well.

For the men, Jonathon Lavelle was able to lead them to a seventh place finish. Lavelle finished in 31st place with a time of 27:46 in the 8,000-meter run. Jordan Tager and Michael Allsopp were the next two to cross the finish line for the Brevard men as they each crossed at 28:08. Erik Gibbs covered all 8,000 meters in 28:52, while Josh Mower finished at 29:23. Tiffen Tapia crossed the finish line 10 seconds after Mower at 29:33. Chris Shore was able to finish in 30 minutes even and Christopher Shelton covered the course in 30:51. Tusculum’s Simon Holzapfel took the race with a time of 25:04 while Mars Hill was able to take the team title finishing three of the top four racers.
