Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team was downed on Saturday afternoon when they were dropped 70-65 at the hands of the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. Despite leading for much of the second half, the Tornados were unable to hold off the Bears who moved to 6-7 on the season and 3-2 in conference play. With the loss BC falls to 5-11 in the 2010-11 season and 1-5 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Precious Elkins dominated the first half for the Bears scoring 11 points. Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) led BC in the first half with nine points. Amanda Whitaker wasn’t far behind, as she had eight of her own in the first 20 minutes of the game. Whitaker also had four steals in the first half to lead the Tornados. Heading into half-time the Tornados led 34-29 after a buzzer beating three-pointer by Schlobohm.
Brevard held a lead as late as 3:51 left in the game when they were up 62-57. However, the Bears were able to jump on top after Cameron Sealey sparked them with a three-point play. Down the final stretch the Bears were able to hit their free-throws and get on top by as many as eight, 70-62 with three seconds left. Asheley Watkins (Bostic, N.C.) hit a last second half court shot to make the final score 70-65.
Sealey led all-scorers in the game with 22 points. Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) led the Tornados with 15 points in the loss. Amanda Whitaker ended the game with six steals, while Candice Fritz (North East, MD) had a pair of blocks in the loss. Anna Schlobohm finished the game with 11 points and led Brevard with four rebounds.
The Tornados are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Harrogate, Tennessee to take on the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters. Game time is set for 6 p.m. and you can catch all of the action on 1240-AM WSQL or at WSQLRadio.com.
