TORNADOS HELP OUT WITH TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY SPECIAL OLYMPICS BASKETBALL TEAM

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College men’s and women’s basketball teams recently took time out of their season to practice with the Transylvania County Special Olympics basketball team at Brevard Elementary School.

Brevard Head Men’s Basketball Coach Michael Jones had the following to say, "It’s a real honor for us to be involved with the Special Olympics. It’s a great opportunity for our team and something our guys really enjoy."

The Tornados helped the athletes in guiding them through a series of drills, including running with the ball, dribbling in place, dribbling backwards and forwards, bounce and chest passes, as well as free throw shooting.

"Our student-athletes always enjoy the opportunity to work with Special Olympics," commented Head Women’s Basketball Coach Shannon Reid. "It was exciting to see the interaction and enthusiasm between both groups on the court. It means so much to our players to share our talents with their athletes."

The Transylvania County Special Olympics team enters their final week of basketball practice this week, before beginning the Track and Field season in February.

Special Olympics Head Basketball Coach Dick Ream had the final words to say, "I’ve been involved with Special Olympics for over 25 years as a volunteer, coach and coordinator and the rewards from this involvement remain endless. The experience the athletes had with the College basketball teams was very rewarding and the Special Olympics athletes have said they will be at the BC basketball games to cheer the Tornados to victory."

The Brevard College basketball teams take the court tonight against Newberry College in SAC competition in Boshamer Gymnasium, with tipoff for the women’s game coming at 6 p.m., with tipoff for the men following the conclusion of the women’s game.
