Tornados fell in their sixth straight with the loss to Newberry

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team was unable to hold off the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday as they fell 59-53 at Boshamer Gymnasium. Despite double-digit efforts by Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) and Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) the Tornados were snubbed and fell to 5-14 on the season and 1-8 in South Atlantic Conference play.

The Tornados opened up the scoring by hitting the first five points, however they were ambushed by a 13-0 Wolves’ run and trailed 13-5 with 14:15 left in the game. Anna Schlobohm hit her first bucket of the game to make it a five-point game at the 12:46 mark. Schlobohm’s three-ball ended the Wolves first run of the game, making it 13-8.

Brevard clawed back and took the lead 16-14 with just over 10 minutes left in the first half after scoring three buckets in two minutes. After trading buckets back and forth, BC was able to garner another five-point lead after an Asheley Watkins (Bostic, N.C.) jumper put them on-top 21-16 with 8:41 left in the first half. The Tornados were unable to hold on to their lead as they went into half-time trailing 27-26.

Anna Schlobohm led the Tornados offense in the first half scoring 11 points including going 3-of-4 from three-point land in the opening 20 minutes of play. BC shot just 30.8% from the field in the first half going 8-of-26, including a 4-for-14 performance from beyond the arc, good for 28.6%. Leanne Watson led Newberry with nine points in the first half.

The Tornados were able to trade-off baskets in the opening 10 minutes of the second half but Newberry took a seven point lead when Keisha Henderson hit a running jumper to put the Wolves on-top 43-36 with 8:41 left in the game. Brevard brought the game to within one-point when the Tornados went on a 6-0 run capped by a Micheala Watkin’s three-pointer. After each team hit a two-ball their next time down the floor, Brevard trailed by one, 51-50 with 2:38 remaining. The Wolves answered by going on an 8-0 run giving them a 59-50 lead with 29 seconds left in the game. Chezney McJunkin (Easley, S.C.) hit a three-pointer with just nine seconds on the clock on a pass from Jazzmin Brown (Salisbury, N.C.) to finish out the game 59-53.

Anna Schlobohm led all-scorers along with Leanne Watson and Briana Johnson of Newberry with 13 points a piece. Micheala Watkins was able to add 11 points, as well as, five assists, five steals, and four rebounds. The Tornados struggled from the field shooting just 34%. Brevard also had some issues at the charity stripe going just 12-of-22 from the free-throw line which was good for a 54.5%.

The Tornados are back in action on Saturday, January 29 when they play host to the visiting Anderson Trojans. Brevard fell 63-52 in the last meeting between the two schools at the Abney Athletic Center in Anderson, S.C. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Boshamer Gymnasium.
