Central, S.C. - The Brevard College softball team opened up their 2011 campaign with a pair of victories in a doubleheader sweep of the Southern Wesleyan Warriors on Wednesday at Varsity Field in Central, South Carolina. The Tornados were led by stellar pitching performances by senior, Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) and freshman, Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.)
The Tornados picked up a win in game one 2-0 and won the nightcap 3-1 over the Warriors. With the pair of wins Brevard is now 2-0 on the season.
Game 1: Brevard 2, Southern Wesleyan 0
The Tornados did all of their offensive damage in the top of the first inning when senior first baseman, Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) led the game off with single to right field. Carlos advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by fellow senior, Kayla Dorsey (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) reached first on a walk following the sacrifice by Dorsey. Junior catcher, Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.) reached on an error by the Warriors’ shortstop which allowed Carlos to come around and score the first run of the game for Brevard. Curlee scored when sophomore, Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.) singled to left scoring the final run of the game for the Tornados.
Martika Elmore was good in the circle for Brevard. She pitched a complete game shutout while striking out 15 batters. Elmore moved to 1-0 on the season while scattering just two hits in the Tornados season-opening victory.
The Tornados had just three hits in the game, with two coming off of the bat of Clemens. She was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Mallory added the only other RBI in the game. Carlos had the other hit for Brevard. She was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Game 2: Brevard 3, Southern Wesleyan 1
Between the Tornados and Warriors, there were just four hits in the first three and a half innings of play. However, the Warriors were able to strike first in the bottom of the fourth.
Megan James led off the bottom of the fourth with an infield single. After two outs, Kayla Galloway hit a two-out double to deep left field which scored Kelsey Mains who pinch-ran for James. Alyssa Miller was able to rally and get out of the inning without allowing any more runs to cross.
In the next half inning the Tornados were able to return-fire with three runs of their own. Meredith Davenport (High Point, N.C.) led off the top of the fifth with a double to left field. Brittany Jones (Fort Mill, S.C.) was able to reach on a fielding error by the Southern Wesleyan third baseman. Kayla Dorsey grounded out to the shortstop which allowed both runners to advance. Becca Curlee followed it up by popping up to the shortstop. With two down and runners at second and third, the stage was set for Chelsi Mallory. Mallory was able to belt a three-run homer to put Brevard up 3-1 which is where the score remained through the remaining inning and a half.
Alyssa Miller went the entire seven innings for the Tornados and struck out 11 batters. She surrendered seven hits and walked just two batters while moving to 1-0 in the first game of her collegiate career.
The Tornado softball team is back in action on Saturday, February 12th when they travel to Aiken, South Carolina to take on the Pacers of USC-Aiken. The doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. with the second game to start at 4 p.m.
