Mars Hill, N.C. - Josh Roper and Gaither Hendrix combined for 28 points in the second half as the Tornados attempted to comeback, but three Mars Hill Lions players scored over 20 points, led by Donterious Hughes’ game high 25 as the Tornados fell in Stanford Arena, 91-80.
The Tornados (9-11, 6-8 SAC) split the season series with the Lions in falling on Saturday afternoon. Roper led Brevard with 24 points and added five rebounds, while Hendrix scored 20 with four assists as the Tornados hit 42.0 percent (29-69) form the floor in the game. Drew Schauss added 10 points and five rebounds after missing most of the week with an ankle injury as the Tornados fell to the Lions.
Hughes led the way for the Lions (9-13, 6-8 SAC) with 25 points and added 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Sammy Emile added 24 points and Dion Malachi scored 23 as the Mars Hill out-rebounded the Tornados 45-34 and had 17 second chance points in the ball game in recording the season split.
The Tornados scored the first four points of the contest as Roper opened the scoring with a jumper at the 19:30 mark and Josh Jordan went in for the layup as Brevard held the 4-0 advantage early. Sammy Emile opened the gates for the Lions, hitting a three-pointer with 18:43 to play, cutting the lead down to one.
A layup by Austin Patton went in for the layup on the next Mars Hill possession to put the Lions up 5-4 as the Lions went 14-2 run, capped by a dunk by Malachi as the Lions took the 14-6 lead. The Tornados battled back, bringing the game to within two points on three separate occasions, with the last coming at the 2:11 mark as Hendrix went in for the layup to put the score at 35-33, but the Lions went into halftime with the 41-37 lead.
Brevard took the lead early in the second half, going up by one as Hendrix drilled a trey with 17:44 to play as the Tornados went up 46-45. Malachi score three straight to give the Lions the 48-46 advantage, but Jermichael Tanner drove in for the layup to force the only tie in the game at 48 with 16:57 to play.
Hendrix hit a three-pointer to give the Tornados their largest lead of the second half with 16:45 to play, giving Brevard the 51-48 edge, but Mars Hill regained the lead with 13:57 to play as Hughes went in for the fast break layup, putting the score at 54-53. The Lions steadily built a 10 point lead at 73-63 with 7:28 to go and though the Tornados challenged late, Mars Hill came away with the 91-80 victory.
Brevard stays on the road as they travel down to Young Harris, Ga. on Monday, February 14th, as they take on Young Harris College. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Mountain Lions in the YHC Basketball Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
