BC rode pitching performances from Elmore and Miller to the victories

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College softball team was able to sweep Milligan College in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Brevard College Softball Field. Brevard (4-2) was able to improve their record on outstanding pitching performances by both Martika Elmore and Alyssa Miller as they won 3-2 in game one which lasted nine innings, and 1-0 in the second game.

Milligan struck first in the opener by plating a run in the third inning. Jessica Fix hit a one-out double, which brought Camille Olvey to the plate. Olvey singled which moved Fix up to third. A throwing error by Brittany Jones (Fort Mill, S.C.) allowed the runner at third to score and Olvey to advance to second. The Tornados left Olvey stranded.

Brevard was able to return-fire with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third. Freshman, Meredith Davenport (High Point, N.C.) singled to lead off the inning. Fellow freshman, Brittany Fowler (Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA) singled on a bunt advancing Davenport to second. Kayla Dorsey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with just one out. Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) was able to score Davenport from third on a sacrifice fly to left field tying things up at one-run a piece. The Tornados were unable to plate Fowler.

There was no scoring until extra innings following the third. The Buffaloes of Milligan struck first in extras. Alicia Engle was placed on second to start the inning, as she was the final out in the top of the seventh. Engle advanced to third on a deep fly ball from Fix, the first out of the inning. Engle was able to score on a passed ball during the next at-bat, scoring the final Buffaloes run.

The Tornados were able to strike back in the bottom half when Chelsea Watson (Seiverville, Tenn.) pinch-ran for catcher, Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.). Watson advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.). She was able to tie things up when Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) hit an RBI-groundout to the second baseman, making it 2-2.

After a scoreless top of the ninth, Jones was placed on second to start the bottom half. Maddie Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C.) was able to do a job when she got down a sacrifice bunt to move Jones to third. Davenport was able to single up the middle in the next at-bat giving Brevard a win in their home-opener, 3-2.

Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) spent all nine innings in the circle for the Tornados. She improved to 2-1 on the season after striking out 10 and allowing two unearned runs on five hits. She walked just two batters in the win.

Meredith Davenport led the offensive charge for BC going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Curlee and Carlos added the other RBI’s for the Tornados.

Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.) was the starter for Brevard in the night-cap of the twinbill. Miller threw all seven innings for the Tornados. She picked up her second career win and moved to 2-1 on the season after striking out seven, without allowing a run on four hits.

The Tornados scored just one run on three hits in the second game. The lone run came in the bottom of the fourth following a lead-off triple by Brittany Fowler. With one-out and Fowler on third, Chelsi Mallory was able to draw a walk, bringing Kayla Clemens to the plate. Clemens hit a single to the first baseman who attempted to throw Fowler out at home but the throw was late giving the Tornados the 1-0 edge which they held the remainder of the game.

The Tornados’ softball team continues their home schedule on Saturday when they play host to Columbia College for another doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Brevard College Softball Field.
