TORNADOS SHUTOUT KOALAS IN DOUBLEHEADER 2-0, 12-0

Brevard exploded for 12 runs in game two

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Tornados’ softball team was able to sweep the Columbia College Fighting Koalas on Saturday afternoon as they shutout Columbia in both games of the doubleheader. Martika Elmore picked up the win in game one, 2-0, while Alyssa Miller received the winning decision in the 12-0 win of the second game.

The Tornados took game one, 2-0, using another dominant pitching performance by senior, Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.). Elmore threw her fourth complete game of the season in the first game. Elmore tied her career-high of 16 strikeouts through seven innings of work for Brevard. She scattered just two hits and walked two in route to her third win of the season, she is now 3-1.

The Tornados offense scored just two runs in the game, with the first coming in the second inning. Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) led off the bottom of the second by singling up the middle. Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) was hit by a pitch in the next at bat, moving Curlee to second. With runners at first and second, Brittany Jones (Fort Mill, S.C.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners up a base. Ally Davenport (High Point) hit an infield single to load the bases, which brought Meredith Davenport (High Point, N.C.) to the batter’s box. Meredith Davenport was able to plate Curlee from third after reaching on a fielder’s choice.

Brevard got their insurance run in the fourth when Carlos scored an unearned run when Meredith Davenport singled to pick up her second RBI.

Brevard scored two runs on just six hits, with Meredith Davenport picking up both RBI.

The Tornados offense exploded for 12 runs in the second game on Saturday. Sarah Carlos led the way going 1-for-3, but her one hit was a first-inning grand slam which gave Brevard an early 5-0 lead. Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.) was 2-for-3 in the win. Clemens hit her first home run of the season and had two RBI in the win. Brittany Jones and Ally Davenport were each 2-for-2 in the win, while Jones hit a triple and a double . Jones scored a pair of runs, while Davenport crossed the plate once and drove one run in. Brittany Fowler (Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA) was 1-for-4 with her third triple of the year, two RBI, and one run scored. All but one starter was able to reach base safely on a hit in the Tornados sixth win of the season.

Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.) was the Brevard starter in the second game of the doubleheader. Miller threw just five innings for the Tornados as the game was shortened due to the NCAA "Run Rule". Miller struck out six in her third win of the season. She moved to 3-1 after allowing just three hits in the win.

Brevard hits the diamond again on Sunday, February 20th when they play host to the Winston-Salem State Rams in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Brevard College Softball Field on Sunday.
