Brevard couldn't match the firepower of Lenoir-Rhyne in the loss

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team was unable to cage the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears on Saturday afternoon as they fell 65-40 at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium in Hickory, North Carolina. With the loss Brevard fell to 6-20 on the season and 2-14 in South Atlantic Conference play.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears jumped out in front of the Tornados quickly and never looked back as they started the first half with a 14-4 run, giving the Bears their first double-digit lead of the game. Brevard was able to bring it back within eight but the Bears return-fired with nine straight points giving them a 23-6 lead with 9:22 left in the first half. The Bears were able to continue to build their lead as they took a 30-8 advantage with 7:41. Brevard tried to fight their way back into the game throughout the remainder of the half and went into the locker room trailing 38-24.

Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) led the Tornados with nine points in the first half. Brevard shot just 28.6% from the field in the first half and just 18.2% from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes.

The Bears were able to jump out to a 20 point lead quickly into the second half. Lenoir-Rhyne continued to build on their lead and were up by as many as 28, 62-34, with just under five minutes remaining. The Tornados were unable to overcome the large deficit in the final five minutes and fell 65-40.

Schlobohm led the offensive charge with 14 points off of the bench. Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) was able to chip in with 11 points. Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) was the defensive leader as she came up with four steals in the loss. Brevard shot just 11-of-54 from the field, 20.8%. The Tornados hit just three three-point buckets and shot 13% from beyond the arc.

The Tornados are back in action on Wednesday, February 23rd when they travel to Newberry, South Carolina to take on the Newberry Wolves. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Eleazer Arena. You can catch all of the action on 1240-AM WSQL or
