TORNADOS FALL 72-69 IN SEASON FINALE

The Bulldogs downed Brevard by three in the season finale at Boshamer Gymnasium

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s basketball team fell in the final minutes at Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Brevard and Wingate traded the lead 12 times as the Tornados were down 72-69 on Senior Night. Brevard fell to 6-22 and 2-16 in South Atlantic Conference play with the loss.

It was a very tight game throughout the entire contest as the largest lead in the entire game was six and it was held by the Bulldogs in the opening minute after they hit a pair of three-pointers to start the game. After taking a 6-0 lead, Brevard was able to trade baskets through most of the first half. The Tornados took their first lead of the game at the 13:21 mark when Asheley Watkins (Bostic, N.C.) hit a lay-up to put Brevard on-top 13-11.

Brevard was able to take their biggest lead of the game, four points, when Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) went 2-of-2 from the free-throw line at the 12:58 marker. The Tornados and Bulldogs continued to trade baskets throughout the remainder of the half, and Wingate regained the lead with 22 seconds remaining on the clock to put the Bulldogs up 34-32. Holli Flippo (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) hit a three-ball to put Brevard on-top 35-34 as the teams went into the locker room at the half.

Lindsay Brendle led the Tornado offense in the opening 20 minutes with 13 points. She was 4-of-5 from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, as well as going 3-for-4 from the charity stripe in the opening half. Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) and Amanda Whitaker each chipped in with five points in the first half. Brevard shot 44.4% from the field in the first half and 38.5% from three-point land in the first half. For the Bulldogs, Janitsha Williams led the way with nine points.

There were five straight lead changes in the opening two minutes and 12 seconds of the second half until Wingate was able to get up by four on Brevard. The Tornados responded with nine straight points to take their largest lead of the game which was five points, as they led 48-43. Wingate came back to fire for five straight points and tie things up again.

Brevard and Wingate were content to trade buckets for a while in the second half as well. Wingate was able to retake a six point lead with 4:28 remaining in the game. Brevard was able to come back and score six straight points and tie things up at 65 with 1:43 left in the game. Sarah Wollett gave Wingate the lead when she hit a jumper, and Lindsay Brendle answered by hitting a pair of free-throws to make it 67-67 with 59 seconds on the clock. Tish Logan hit a pair of free-ones on Wingate’s next time down the floor giving the Bulldogs another two-point lead and Brendle answered with a pair of free-throws again making it 69-69 with 38 seconds left. Janitsha Williams hit a jumper giving Wingate a 71-69 lead with 17 seconds left.

Brevard was given two shots to answer Williams’ two-pointer. Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) was unable to convert on both shots as the Tornados fell 72-69.

Brendle scored 21 points for the Tornados while Micheala Watkins added 14. Whitaker and Flippo contributed nine points a piece, while Schlobohm scored eight in the loss. Janitsha Williams led all scorers with 24 points, while Simone Rutledge and Sarah Wollett each added double-figure points with 11 and 10 respectively.

The Tornados finished their season with a record of 6-22. The Tornados finished their South Atlantic Conference season with a record of 2-16.
