Florence, S.C. – The Brevard College softball team split a pair of games in the Patriot Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Tornados were able to take down the host school, Francis Marion University 3-0 but fell in the nightcap 8-0 against #17 Rollins College.
The Tornados moved to 17-6 after Saturday's doubleheader.
Game One: Brevard 3, Francis Marion 0
Brevard did all of their offensive work in one inning of Saturday’s opener. In the fifth inning, Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) led off with a walk. Meredith Davenport (High Point, N.C.) singled to move Carlos up to second. Ally Davenport (High Point, N.C.) walked to load the bases. Next up was Brittany Fowler (Waterloo, Ontario, CANANDA) grounded into a fielder’s choice for the second out, bringing Kayla Dorsey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) to the plate. With bases loaded and two-outs, Dorsey roped a double which cleared the bases giving Brevard a 3-0 lead, which they held the remainder of the game.
Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) went the distance for the Tornados. She allowed just five hits in her shutout. She struck out eight and walked just one in her ninth win of the season. Elmore is now 9-3 on the season.
Game Two: #17 Rollins 8, Brevard 0
The Tornados were unable to get the bats going in the nightcap as they fell to #17-ranked Rollins College 8-0. Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.) started the game for the Tornados, after allowing two runs, both were earned she was pulled and Elmore took over the pitching duties. Elmore was touched for five runs, two earned through three innings. Miller returned to the circle in the sixth to close out the game. Miller ended up allowing another run on a homer.
Brevard finishes up their run in the Patriot Invitational on Sunday when they play a pair of games. The Tornados open up Sunday with GLIAC opponent, Hillsdale College at 9 a.m. They finish up by taking on Armstrong Atlantic State at 11 a.m.
