Brevard, N.C. - Steele Myers had three RBIs in the first game of the doubleheader, while Randy O’Dell and Ron Patterson had two hits apiece in game two, but Milligan used big innings in both games to sweep the doubleheader over the host Tornados, 16-4 and 6-4.
Alex Litaker and Michael Bradley suffered the losses for Brevard (11-17), while Tyler Walker and Ethan Fleenor recorded the victories for the Buffaloes (16-13).
Game One: Milligan 16, Brevard 4 (5 innings)
The Buffaloes saw their first 13 batters reach base in the top of the third and 11 came around to score to blow open the first game of the doubleheader as Milligan took down the Tornados, 16-4.
Milligan chased BC starter Litaker in the first inning as the first five batters all reached base and scored to take the early 5-0 lead.
The Tornados answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning as Kramer Clark reached on a one-out error by the second baseman. O’Dell followed with a double to the left centerfield gap scoring Clark to put the Tornados on the board. Two batters later, Myers lifted a pitch from Walker to straightaway centerfield, scoring O’Dell from third to put the score at 5-2 after one.
The Buffaloes did most of their damage in the third inning, sending 16 batters to the plate. The Tornados made four pitching changes in the inning, before Will Bullock retired the side to end the inning, but only after 11 runs crossed the plate.
Brevard plated runs in both the third and the fifth as Myers doubled down the line in the third to score Clark, and Myers again brought home the BC left fielder with a base hit through the left side of the infield in the fifth, but it was not enough as the Tornados fell in the first game, 16-4.
Clark was 1-for-2 in the first game, scoring three runs, while Dustin Haithcox pitched two shutout innings to retire Milligan and end the game.
Game Two: Milligan 6, Brevard 4
Bradley (0-1) pitched four effective innings in his first start of the 2011 season, but the Buffaloes used a four-run fourth inning to jump ahead and the Tornados rally fell short as Brevard was unable to prevent the sweep in falling 6-4.
Cory Hilton led off the fourth inning with a double to left centerfield and came around to score on Tyler Hutson’s one-out double down the right field line. Bradley retired the next batter on strikes, but Dustin Clawson followed with a base hit, scoring Hutson and Wesley Jones cleared the bases with a home run down the left field line to give Milligan the 4-0 lead.
The Tornados scored three in the bottom of the sixth to climb back into the game as Patterson brought in two with a base hit through the right side of the infield. The right fielder misplayed the grounder, allowing it to get past him and Clark and O’Dell came around to score with Patterson holding up at third. Merriken’s single down the left field line scored Patterson and the relay from the left fielder into the infield bounced away, allowing Merriken to reach third base with none out. Sean Robinson was able to escape the jam as Merriken was thrown out trying to score on Myers’ infield grounder and the pitcher retired the next two batters to end the inning with the lead intact.
Milligan plated a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as Luke Kirk doubled to lead off the inning, before coming around to score on Kyle Kolat’s sacrifice fly. Cody Hyder also brought in a run, scoring Hilton with a single to give the Buffaloes the 6-3 lead.
The Tornados scored one run off J.J. Bergamin in the bottom half of the inning and had the winning run at the plate, but were unable to tie it up in falling 6-4.
