TORNADOS DROP TWO IN GREENEVILLE, 5-0 & 4-3

The Tusculum softball team defeated Brevard 5-0 in game one, and 4-3 after trailing 3-0 in the second

Greeneville, Tenn. – The Brevard College softball team was swept by the Tusculum Pioneers on Tuesday afternoon in a twinbill hosted by Tusculum. The Tornados fell 5-0 in the opener, and Tusculum came back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Brevard 4-3 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Brevard fell to 23-10 on the season, and 3-3 in South Atlantic Conference play. Tusculum improved their conference record to 5-1 and are now 24-9 on the season.

The Pioneers struck first in the opener when Ashley Burke singled home Taylor MacDonald in the bottom of the first inning, giving Tusculum a 1-0 lead. MacDonald reached on a single, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She got to third by way of a wild pitch before being brought home on the Burke single.

Tusculum added on to their 1-0 lead in the second inning when with the bases loaded, starting pitcher, Martika Elmore (Fayetteville, N.C.) walked in a run, putting the Pioneers up 2-0. Lindsey Umberger hit a bases loaded, two-out, base clearing double to put Tusculum on-top 5-0, which is were the score remained for the rest of the game.

Elmore was charged with the loss, falling to 12-6 on the season. Elmore went all six innings for Brevard as she was touched for five runs on seven hits. Erin Searcy picked up the win for Tusculum. She moved to 11-7 on the season.

At the plate, Brevard had just three hits. Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.), Kayla Clemens (Sebring, Fla.) and Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) each delivered a hit for the Tornados. Carlos’ was a double.

In the night cap, Brevard jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kayla Dorsey (West Palm Beach, Fla.) hit a one-out double to left field. Mallory was next to the plate and singled through the left side, advancing Dorsey to third. Clemens brought Dorsey in with a single of her own.

The Tornados increased their lead by a run in the second. Carlos led off the inning with a walk and was advanced by a sacrifice bunt laid down by Brittany Jones (Fort Mill, S.C.). Emily Boykin (Chapel Hill, N.C.) followed Jones by smoking a double to right centerfield, scoring Carlos from second to make it 2-0.

There wasn’t any scoring following the second, until Brevard was able to make it 3-0 in the sixth. Mallory hit a one-out single and was able to score when Becca Curlee ripped a two-out double, putting BC up by three.

Things looked good for the Tornados, but the Pioneers’ bats awoke in the bottom of the sixth. Tusculum struck for four runs putting them on top 4-3 heading into the seventh inning. Brevard was unable to respond in the seventh as they fell 4-3.

Alyssa Miller (Davie, Fla.) was tagged for the loss as she fell to 11-4 on the season. Miller went all six innings for Brevard and was touched for four runs on eight hits in the loss.

The Tornados are back at home on Saturday, April 1st, when they play host to South Atlantic Conference rival Mars Hill College. Brevard is set to square off with the Lions at 1 p.m. at the Brevard College Softball Field.
