Pisgah Forest, N.C. - The Brevard College men's golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the 2008 fall season on Monday afternoon, as the Tornados placed two teams in the top-five of the final team standings at the Glen Cannon Fall Invitational. Brevard "A" team took first-place in the event, carding a combined two round team score of 597.
The "A" Team edged out second-place finisher Cape Fear CC (600) by three strokes. The Brevard College "B" team turned in a fifth-place showing, carding a two round combined team score of 623.
The Tornados were led by freshmen Joshua Davis and Bret McGaughey as both finished in the top-five overall and earned a spot on the all tournament team. Davis, who carded a round of 72, even par on Sunday, finished with a round of 74, +2 on Monday to force a playoff with Cape Fear CC's Landon Pearson. Davis won in the second playoff hole to medal and pick up the first-place finish overall. McGaughey, who was in a three-way tie for first with a low round of 71, -1, heading into play on Monday morning, turned in a solid round of 76, +4, to finish in a tie for third-place overall in his first intercolleigate tournament.
Juniors Grant Carnie and Thomas Bush, who both finished just outside of the top-10, turned in a two day combined score of 151 and 153, respectively, to help push team "A" to the top for the overall team victory. Senior Craig Galloway rounded out the scoring for the Tornados "A" team with a combined two round score of 161.
Brevard team "B" did not disappoint as the Tornados played strong down the stretch to finish fifth-place overall.
Senior Myles Johnston turned in two rounds of 75, to finish tied for ninth-place overall with his combined team score of 150. Fellow senior Chris White carded a two day score of 154, while newcomers Joshua Nelson and Thomas Rennie turned in scores of 158 and 161, respectively, for the tournament. Sophomore Jesse Merritt also was a part of team "B", shooting a two round score of 183 over the event.
Right behind the Tornados was Cape Fear CC, who turned in a 600 over the two day event. Mars Hill finished third with a score of 605, while Tri-Count CC finished in fourth-place with a score of 616.
Individually behind BC's Davis and Cape Fear CC's Pearson was a three-way tie between the Tornados McGaughey, Montreat's Nathan Blankenship and Cape Fear's Matt Lawson, who all shot 147 for the tournament.
The Tornados will next be in action on Monday, September 22, when they will compete in the Webber Fall Invitational in Babson Park, Florida.
