Greeneville, Tenn. - Randy O’Dell had two hits and Christian Christopoulos added a double as Brevard opened up the weekend series against SAC opponent Tusculum College. However, Craig Goodwen went eight innings on the mound for the Pioneers and Matt Henriksen hit a ball out of the park as Tusculum defeated Brevard on Friday evening, 9-0.
Joseph Lepore (1-3) took the loss for the Tornados (11-21, 3-15 SAC), giving up four earned runs in five innings, striking out a batter, while Michael Bradley threw three shutout innings in relief for Brevard. Goodwent (6-2) retired seven batters on strikes for the Pioneers (25-9, 12-7 SAC), scattering four hits, while T.J. Abounader closed out the shutout with an inning of one-hit relief.
Sean Cotton reached on a fielding error in the bottom of the first with two outs and Alexi Colon followed with a triple down the right field line to score the first run of the game. Cody Coffen singled Colon home to give Tusculum the early 2-0 lead.
Branfy Arias increased the lead by scoring a run in the bottom of the second, coming around on a throwing error and Rolondo Bonner drove in Lukas Graves with a double down the right field line to put Tusculum up 4-0 after two.
The Pioneers added five runs through innings four through six, with Henriksen contributing to the run scoring with a two-run homer down the left field line with one out in the fifth and though Brevard put a runner in scoring position in the eighth, the Tornados were unable to score as Brevard fell in game one to Tusculum, 9-0.
The Tornados and the Pioneers will remain in conference play tomorrow afternoon in Greeneville, Tenn. as they battle in a doubleheader at Pioneer Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
