Rebecca Schoonover of the women's volleyball team has been named the Week 3 Tornado Athlete of the week. The sophomore libero from Palm City, Fla. earned 27 of the 67 votes cast by visitors of BCTornados.com, or 40.3%. Men's soccer player Kyle Hamilton, who scored the team's only goal in a 1-nil victory Saturday against Pfeiffer, came in second with 21 votes.
Strong performances from Schoonover led the Tornado volleyball squad to two victories in three matches last week. Thursday against Belmont Abbey, Schoonover anchored the defense with 16 digs as the team rallied from two sets down to score a 3-2 victory. She topped that performance in the side's Saturday morning match, cleaning house with 21 digs en route to a 3-1 thrashing of North Greenville. But the backline wizard saved her best for last, posting a whopping 35 digs in a 3-1 defeat to Southern Wesleyan.
Schoonover is the second volleyball player to win the Tornado Athlete of the Week award. Middle hitter Brooke Seaman was honored as TAW in the first week of the athletic season.
The women's volleyball team opens South Atlantic Conference play with a pair of trips to Tennessee this week. Tuesday Brenda Skeffington's team travels to Jefferson City to face Carson-Newman, and Saturday they'll be in Harrogate for a meeting with Lincoln Memorial.
