Jefferson City, T.N. – The Brevard College women’s volleyball team opened up their 2008 South Atlantic Conference slate on Tuesday night, as the Tornados fell on the road to the Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-23, and 25-18).

The loss drops the Tornados to 7-4 on the year and 0-1 in SAC play, while Carson-Newman improves to 8-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win.

The Tornados came out of the gates strong in the first ever SAC match taking a quick 10-3 lead and then holding on to win the first set 25-17.

Junior Brooke Seaman had four kills in the set as the Tornados won nine-straight points to turn an early 3-1 deficit into the lead. Sophomore libero Rebecca Schoonover had nine digs in the set.

Carson-Newman answered back to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-17 win in the second set.

Juniors Jessica Schachleiter and Caitlin Schlegel combined for 11 kills as C-N evened the match. Senior Allyson Cohrn had 14 assists in the set, while as a team the Lady Eagles had six aces in the set.

In the third set, the Tornados grabbed an early lead at 15-9, but the Lady Eagles rallied to cut it to 17-17, eventually holding off BC down the stretch to pick up the 25-23 win and take a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set, the Lady Eagles were able to hold off the Tornados to pick up the 25-18 win.

Seaman led Brevard with 15 kills, two solo blocks and one block assist.  Freshman Chelsea Larsen added 12 kills of her own.  Senior co-captain and setter Jami Perry dished out 27 assists for the match to go along with her five digs.

Schoonover recorded a team-high 24 digs, while freshman Lindsey Rogers had 18 digs.

For Carson-Newman, sophomore Carly Mozgai led the way with 13 kills, including five in the decisive fourth game, while Cohrn added 36 assists.

The Tornados will travel back to the Volunteer State of Tennessee for their next match for a 2 p.m. date on Saturday, September 20 with SAC foe Lincoln Memorial. Carson-Newman will return to action this weekend at the Francis Marion Tournament in Florence, S.C.
