Tornados will hosted annual awards ceremony in Porter Center

Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Athletic Department and BC Athletic Director Kim Pate is pleased to announce the 2010-2011 BC Athletic Award Ceremony will be held on Monday, May 2nd, in the Porter Center for Performing Arts, with the ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m.

"The annual athletics awards ceremony has become a much anticipated event that our student-athletes and coaches look forward to as a way to cap off our year and celebrate our student-athletes achievements both on and off the court," said Pate. "I would encourage all of our fans and supporters to come out and support our student-athletes for this special event."

Several changes to the ceremonial events this year include a special cookout for all Brevard College senior athletes on Friday, April 29th, at noon alongside King’s Creek, sponsored by the BC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Tornados will also be presenting a special recognition to Dr. Drew Van Horn during the award ceremony, recognizing Dr. Van Horn’s many contributions to the college and athletic department during his tenure as President. The Athletic Department will also be holding a special recognition in memory of Brian Johnson, a long-standing Tornado Club member, former Trustee of the College and supporter of all student-athletes for his outstanding dedication to the BC Athletic Department.

During the ceremony, the Tornados will also recognize the 2010-2011 Male and Female Athlete of the Year, among the candidates nominated by the BC Head Coaching staff. This year’s nominees include: Kelvin Jeter, Josh Roper, Tristan Cowie, Scott McCormick, Ricky Wallace, Lindsay Shaeffer, Martika Elmore, Rebecca Schoonover, Amanda Metcalf, Micheala Watkins, Chelsea Freeman and Angela Canale.

Other awards which will be given out include the Senior G.P.A. Award, Champs Cup Challenge award recognizing the teams that have excelled in life-skill initiatives, and individual team awards which will be presented by the coaches of the Tornados 18 varsity sports.
