The Brevard College Athletic Department celebrated the third year of the Champs Cup Challenge, in which the athletic teams of Brevard College participate and compete in five different NCAA Life Skills components.
The components include: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Career Development, Personal Development and Service Development. The athletes participate and attend various events and games throughout the year on the campus of Brevard College to earn points toward receiving the Champs Cup.
The Cup changed hands for the third time in as many years as the Women’s Basketball team held off the Volleyball team in winning the overall title for the first time under Coach Shannon Reid. The women’s basketball team achieved 404 of the 1812 points earned during the 2010-2011 academic year.
Five teams split the individual category awards, receiving plaques for their achievements.
In the area of Academic Excellence, student-athletes earn points for making the Fall Honor Roll, the Dean’s List, and achieving Academic All-Region and All-American status. The Women’s Tennis team won this award for the first time, claiming the title with 58 points.
The Cycling Team, on the back of their second consecutive Fall Mountain Bike National Championship, won the Athletic Excellence Award for the second time. Teams earn points for this award in various categories including Coach of the Year honors, All-Conference recognition, All-Region honors and National Championship honors. The cyclists garnered a total of 35.1 points, winning the award for the first time since 2008.
In the area of Career Development, the teams participated in resume writing and career seminars that were held on campus throughout the 2010-2011 year. The Softball Team won the award for the first time, earning 64 points in the category.
The teams participated in workshops such as depression screening, alcohol screening, spiritual growth, diversity club, art shows, plays and nutritional seminars in the Personal Development category. The women’s soccer team took home the title this year, receiving 53 points.
In the final category, the Tornados showed their dedication to each other and to the community as they competed in the area of Service Development.
