Brevard, N.C. - Brevard College Interim President Charles Teague announced today the resignation of Athletic Director Kim Pate, effective July 25.
Pate, who has headed the College’s athletics program since 2008, has accepted the position of athletic director at the University of Illinois Springfield in Springfield, Ill.
"Kim Pate has been outstanding as the athletic director at Brevard College for several years," said Teague. "She is professional, articulate, compassionate, committed to Division II athletics, and devoted to Brevard College. Although we celebrate with her the opportunity to move up in her career, we will miss her leadership and commitment to our coaches, staff and student-athletes."
Pate was instrumental in the College’s transitional process from NAIA to NCAA Division II. During her tenure, the men’s basketball team won Brevard’s first South Atlantic Conference Championship, becoming the first BC program to participate in the NCAA Regional tournament. The Cycling team also won back-to-back Fall Mountain Bike Team National Championships along with several individual national titles. The College also completed major renovations to its tennis and basketball facilities as well as expanded its free weight room. Additionally, Pate oversaw the expansion and introduction of sport programs that resulted in a 20 percent growth in student-athlete participation.
"I am grateful for the opportunities I have received at Brevard College," Pate said. "It has been a wonderful experience to serve my Alma Matter and to grow as both a student and a professional. Brevard has a special place in my heart and will always be my school. I have been blessed to work with some very dedicated and talented individuals and I wish the entire College and Community of Brevard great success."
Brevard College also announced today that Juan Mascaro, the associate athletic director and Men’s Soccer coach, will serve as interim athletic director for the College until the next president of the College begins his/her work.
Mascaro came to Brevard in 2007 from Campbell University where he spent two seasons as the assistant Women’s Soccer coach. During his first season at Campbell, he helped the Fighting Camels advance to the 2005 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship.
Prior to Campbell, he was the assistant Men’s Soccer coach for the University of Central Florida for five seasons. During his tenure, the Golden Knights were ranked as high as number-13 nationally and won the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship.
A native of El Salvador, Mascaro earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration and his Master of Arts in Applied Economics from the University of Central Florida. He currently holds his NSCAA National Coaching Diploma and Advanced National Diploma.
"I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity given to me by Dr. Teague and the College," said Mascaro. "During this interim search period, I look forward to leading our already strong athletics program in pursuit of academic and athletic excellence."
