FAIR SKIES AND GOOD PLAY HIGHLIGHT BC OPEN

All proceeds from tournament went in support of over 300 BC student-athletes

Brevard, N.C. - The weather smiled on the BC Open yesterday at the Lake Toxaway Country Club as the participants and staff were greeted with clear skies and fast surfaces. As the morning fog lifted, 76 golfers teed off as planned for an enjoyable day of golf, companionship and prizes.

All proceeds from the tournament went to the Brevard College Athletics Department and over 300 student-athletes.

Golfers and participants were able to mingle with members of the Brevard College athletic staff as Head Coaches Matt McCay (Baseball), Britne Stubbs (Softball), Shannon Reid (Women’s Basketball), Paul Hamilton (Football), Nicole Bumgarner (Tennis) and Interim AD and Men’s Soccer Coach Juan Mascaro were all in attendance. Brevard College Interim President Dr. Charlie Teague was also in attendance at the tournament, taking in the scenes and mingling with all involved.

The play was set for teams of four to compete against each other for prizes, and there were several hole-in-one challenges set up throughout the course.

Two teams tied for the lowest score in the tournament, but due to tiebreakers, the winning quartet of the BC Open was Dan Futrelle, Matt McCay, Brett Miller and Bill Early. Each member of the quartet received a $100 gift certificate to the Lake Toxaway Golf Pro Shop. Coming in second and receiving a $75 certificate each was Hutch Vaughan, Mike Coneys, Jim Sacha and Jochen Lucke.

In third place, with a score of 45.75 was David McCall, Dean Ashenfelder, Dr. James O. Wells, Jr. and Lin Kolb. Each player received $50 gift certificates. Coming in fourth was the quartet of George Harris, Nicole Bumgarner, Dempsey Bailey and Reg Heinitsh, with all players receiving $40 gift certificates.

Also involved in the BC Open was the ability to purchase raffle tickets for several great prizes, including a two night stay at the Greystone Inn, golf foursome at Etowah Valley, Broadmoor, Kenmure and Crooked Creek & Reems Creek courses among others. The winners will be picked at Saturday night’s Pigskin Pigout.

The day would not have been a success if it were not for the wonderful support of Reg Heinitsh and his staff at the Lake Toxaway Country Club, as well as Lou Biago, the golf pro and tournament director at the club.
