Charlotte, N.C. - Jamie Atkinson placed in nine kills as the Tornados opened up the 2011 season with a victory over host Johnson C. Smith University in the first match of the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational. The Tornados took the match over the Golden Bulls in straight sets, 25-10, 25-9, 25-23.
Atkinson led the way with a match high nine kills for Brevard (1-0) as the Tornados hit 32.2 percent for the match. Kortney Conner, the Tornados 2010 kills leader, added six kills in the match for Brevard, who won their first match of the season for the fourth consecutive season.
Bethany Stevenson and Erin Rollins added five kills apiece, while Stevenson contributed a match high 23 set assists.
As a team, Brevard placed in 14 service aces, led by Sydney Yeomans’ four, while Lindsey Rogers led the defensive efforts with eight digs.
Jennifer Williams led the JCSU (0-1) efforts in the match, recording a team high five kills, while Kayla Bazemore and Imeshia Jones added three set assists apiece. Jones also contributed four service aces in the match. Williams and Amber Alexander led the way on the backline for the Golden Bulls with eight digs each in their first defeat of the season.
The Tornados continue play in the afternoon against Johnson & Wales in the second game of the JCSU Volleyball Invitational.
