HILL AND MERKEL LEAD TORNADOS AT THE EYE OPENER

Men place 12th overall, Women finish 14th

Spartanburg, S.C. - Led by freshmen Madison Hill and Bart Merkel, the Brevard College men’s and women’s cross country teams began the 2011 fall season last night at the Spartanburg Eye Opener meet hosted by USC Upstate.

Hill led the BC women’s team to a 14th place overall finish, fourth among the South Atlantic Conference schools that were in attendance at the first meet in the 2011 season. The freshman from Parkersburg, W.Va. crossed the line in 20:01, placing third among the conference runners, and 31st overall among the 134 runners. Angela Canale crossed the line shortly after with a time of 21:04, finishing 54th overall on the evening.

Olivia Fawcett crossed the line with a time of 23:20, while Heidi Kaartinen finished with a time of 23:46 in her first collegiate race. Ariel Muiselaar rounded out the group of runners in the top five for the Tornados with a time of 24:16, while Ashley Lowe and Grace Meanor also took the field for Brevard.

Merkel, racing in his first collegiate event, crossed the line in the men’s 8K with a time of 27:50, finishing seventh among the South Atlantic Conference runners in the event and 42nd overall. Jordan Tager opened up the season strong after solid freshman year, placing 65th in the event with a time of 28:53. Jonathan LaVelle also placed in the top 75, crossing the line in 29:06, finishing 67th.

Chris Shore and Michael Allsopp also placed in BC’s top five, crossing the line in 30:32 and 31:25 respective. Erik Gibbs and Jourdane Landry also took the field for Coach Jack Daniels.

The Tornados Cross Country teams are back in action on Saturday, September 10th, as they travel to Newton, N.C. to take part in the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational. The events are set to begin at 10 a.m.
