Charlotte, N.C. - The Tornados fell in the championship match of the JCSU Invitational Tournament, dropping the final match to Palm Beach Atlantic as they fell to 1-2 on the day and 3-2 overall in the young 2011 season. Brevard made it to the championship match after topping Fayetteville State in four sets in the first match of the day, before falling to Assumption in their 1 p.m. match.
Match One: Brevard 3, Fayetteville State 1 (25-17, 25-19, 17-25, 25-19)
Nine Brevard players recorded kills in the 9 a.m. match against the Broncos, led by Kortney Conner’s nine as the Tornados defeated the Broncos in four sets. Ashlie Morrison added eight kills, while Erin Rollins contributed seven kills in 11 attacks as the Tornados improved to 3-0 on the 2011 season. Freshman hitter Taryn Gmitroski added five kills, while setter Bethany Stevenson paced the BC attack with 25 set assists.
Defensively, the Tornados recorded 52 digs on the match, led by Lindsey Rogers’ 12 digs, while Sydney Yeomans also achieved double digits with 11 in the match.
Joi Emanuel led all players with 10 kills in the match for the Broncos (1-2), while Octavia Wynn added nine as both teams struggled to achieve a high hitting percentage in the match. JaMisha Jordan added 25 set assists and eight digs, while Decausha McLean added a team high nine digs in the loss.
Match Two: Assumption 3, Brevard 1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-17, 29-27)
The Tornados suffered their first loss of the 2011 season at the hands of Assumption, despite a season-high 13 kills by Kortney Conner. Ashlie Morrison added nine kills and Jamie Atkinson contributed eight of her own to help the BC offense, who took the first set against the Greyhounds.
Conner added five service aces in the loss, while the Tornados recorded 55 digs as a team in the match, led by Lindsey Rogers’ 17 and Atkinson’s career high 10.
Match Three: Palm Beach Atlantic 3, Brevard 0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16)
Mariela Quesada led the Sailfish (5-0) to an undefeated weekend at the JCSU Invitational as the Tornados fell for only the second time in the 2011 season, falling in straight sets to Palm Beach Atlantic.
Quesada led all hitters with 18 kills in the match, while Christina Alessi added seven as the Sailfish hit 43.1 percent for the match. Jamie Atkinson led all BC hitters with four kills, while Ashlie Morrison and Erin Rollins added three in the loss.
Brevard remains on the road as they open up South Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday, September 6th as they travel to Hickory, N.C. and Shuford Memorial Gymnasium to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University. First serve between the Tornados and the Bears is set for 7 p.m.
