Montreat, N.C. - The Tornados came out firing on all cylinders in the first half and Brittany Webster made some spectacular plays in the second half as Brevard held off host Montreat College on Tuesday afternoon in recording the 1-0 victory.
Brevard (2-3) opened the first 45 minutes of the match outshooting the Cavaliers, 10-5, with Montreat opening up the attack with an early scoring chance in the 23rd minute. However, Webster proved up to the task, making a huge save on an Alex Mash shot to keep the game scoreless.
The Tornados first scoring opportunity came in the 35th minute of the match when Bailey Varley slipped past the Cavaliers defense and was fouled inside the box, setting up a penalty kick. However, Jamie Bundy’s attempt was saved by Montreat keeper Caroline Mellard.
Brevard made their breakthrough in the 42nd minute when Anderson stripped the ball from a Cavaliers’ defender and chipped the ball past Mellard into the net, giving the Tornados the 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Montreat did not give up in the second half, outshooting the Tornados 11-3, but the Brevard defense proved up to the task in completing their second consecutive shutout.
The Tornados jump into South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday, September 17th, as they travel to Jefferson City, Tenn. where they will take on Carson-Newman College. Kickoff between the Eagles and the Tornados is set for 3 p.m.
