Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s volleyball team picked up their first official South Atlantic Conference win on Tuesday night, as the Tornados swept through the Mars Hill Lions winning in three straight sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-23).
With the win the Tornados improve to 8-5 on the year and 1-2 in conference play, while the loss drops Mars Hill to 4-6 and 0-3 in the SAC.
In set one, the two teams traded points back and forth with neither team able to pull ahead. With the score knotted up at 6-6, a kill by Mars Hill’s Traci Teague started a 5-0 run that put the Lions up 11-6.
After a timeout by Brevard, the Tornados stormed back to push the score to 14-14 after a service ace from Chelsey Trojan. BC then ran off three straight points to go up 17-15 late in the first set.
With both teams trading points again, the Tornados stayed on top and held off the Lions until a service ace from BC’s Rebecca Schoonover sealed the 25-19 win and give the Tornados an early 1-0 lead.
Like set one, set two saw a tight match throughout as neither team could take more than a two point advantage for the set’s entirety. With the score knotted up at 21-21, BC’s Brooke Seaman came through with a big play, spiking the ball into the ground and giving the Tornados a 22-21 lead which they would not relinquish, as Seaman picked up another kill on set point to give BC a 25-22 victory.
In the third and final set, Mars Hill did not give in, jumping out to a huge 8-2 lead on a kill by middle hitter Teague.
The Tornados inched back into the contest, eventually tying the score up at 15-15 on another Trojan service ace.
The two teams would knot up the score again at 23-23, before Trojan picked up a huge kill to put the Tornados on top 24-23 with set point on the way.
With the entire crowd on their feet, senior co-captain Jami Perry picked up a service ace to give the Tornados the 25-23 win and the overall 3-0 match victory.
The Tornados were led by Trojan who had a match-high in both kills with 13 and in digs with 17. Seaman added 12 kills while, Larsen had seven kills of her own.
Defensively behind Trojan’s 17 digs, were Schoonover with 15, freshman Lindsey Rogers and sophomore Cori Emory with seven and Perry with six. Perry also dished out a match-high 33 assists.
As a team the Tornados had seven service aces for the three set match.
For Mars Hill, Evie Tafunai recorded 10 kills on the night, while Jenna Luke and Teague each had eight kills apiece. Libero Kelly Koziel gathered in 10 digs, while setter Jessica Britt dished out 28 assists.
The Tornados will continue their SAC play, as BC will travel to Newberry, S.C. to square off with Newberry College on Friday, September 26, at 7 p.m. Mars Hill will also return to action on Friday night, as the Lions will play host to the Lady Pioneers of Tusculum College at 7 p.m.
