Brevard, N.C. - A pair of goals by both Laura Linehan and Carley Griffin offset a spectacular performance in goal by Brevard’s Brittany Webster as the Tornados were unable to pull of the upset over #8 Lenoir-Rhyne on the BC Soccer Field on Wednesday afternoon, 4-0.
The threat of rain kept the weather cool and overcast in the opening 45 minutes and the Bears (5-1, 2-0 SAC) took advantage early as Linehan connected on her first shot of the game. Webster came out to challenge the ball at the top of the box and Catherine Hauck slipped a pass to the open Linehan in front of the BC (2-5, 0-2 SAC) net for the first goal of the game at the 7:11 mark.
Brevard nearly tied the match up 10 minutes later as Bailey Varley placed a pass high over the L-R backline to an open Hannah Graham inside the box. However, Graham was unable to finish the one-on-one opportunity as Caitlin Scruggs made the diving save to keep the score at 1-0.
Griffin put the score at 2-0 before half, taking the through pass from Hanna Kiebel and lofting it over the outstretched hands of the BC keeper and into the back of the net at the 29:04 mark to put the Bears up at the half.
Lindsay Pritchard also put the Tornados on the board in the second half, launching a shot in the first six minutes of the second half, but Scruggs again made the save, keeping Brevard off the board.
Linehan and Griffin added insurance goals at the 55:34 and 57:32 marks as Linehan touched the ball into the net off the deflection from Webster and Griffin’s attempt from 25 yards out hit the crossbar and bounced into the net as the Tornados fell on Wednesday, 4-0.
Brevard remains in South Atlantic Conference play this weekend as they make the trip to Harrogate, Tenn. to take on Lincoln Memorial University. Kickoff between the Tornados and the Railsplitters is set for 2 p.m.
