CONNER'S 22 KILLS PACE TORNADOS AGAINST ANDERSON AND FRANCIS MARION

Brevard falls in straight sets to Trojans and Patriots

Anderson, S.C. - Kortney Conner recorded 22 kills in the tri-match hosted by Anderson University on Saturday afternoon, but the Tornados were unable to come on top in either match, falling to both host Anderson and Francis Marion in straight sets.

Conner recorded 10 kills for the Tornados (4-17, 0-13 SAC) in the first match of the day against the Trojans and added 12 in the second contest against the Patriots to pace the Brevard attack, while Bethany Stevenson added 38 set assists and Lindsey Rogers added 39 digs in the losses.

Game 1: Anderson 3, Brevard 0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-15)
Box Score

Shannon Gillespie lead host Anderson with 12 kills and Kalie Endres had a match-high 21 digs as the Trojans overcame a 10 kill performance by Conner as the Tornados fell 25-23, 25-10, 25-15.

Brevard broke a deadlock in the first set against the Trojans on a Rogers’ kill as the Tornados went up 12-10, however Anderson continued chipping away at the slight lead in going ahead 20-19 on Marlie Bryant’s kill. Ashley Wilson’s solo block and kills by Atkinson and Conner kept the Tornados in contention, but Hailey Pittman’s point closed the first set in favor of the Trojans 25-23.

The Trojans broke open a tightly contested second set with a 9-0 run on Kalie Endres serve, going up 17-7 before a Conner kill ended the effort. Taryn Gmitroski and Jordei Osby added kills in the set, but Anderson was able to close it out on Alix Hooker’s serve as Anderson went up 2-0.

In the final set, Anderson again used a run to build a 14-9 lead and used the momentum to close out win with the 25-15 victory.

Game Two: Francis Marion 3, Brevard 0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-18)
Box Score

Paige Perreault and Ashlee Crook were both in double-digits in kills to offset Conner’s match-high 12 kills as the Tornados fell to the Patriots, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18.

The Patriots went up 10-4 on a BC attack error on their way to building a 16-8 lead in the first set. A kill by Stevenson and a Rogers’ service ace started a Brevard run as the Tornados closed the game to 21-17 after an ace by Cassie Smatana, but the Patriots closed out the 25-18 set victory.

Francis Marion overcame another Brevard comeback to take the second set 25-21 and the Patriots used a 6-0 run to close out the final set in the 25-18 victory.

The Tornados return home on Tuesday, October 18th, as they welcome Montreat College to Boshamer Gymnasium. First serve between the Tornados and the Cavaliers is set for 7 p.m.
