Hickory, N.C. - Jamie Atkinson and Ashlie Morrison had 10 kills apiece and Bethany Stevenson added 26 set assists and 19 digs, but Brooke Christenbury led host Lenoir-Rhyne past the Tornados with 17 kills and 20 digs as Brevard fell on Thursday evening, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21.
Erin Rollins added eight kills and Kortney Conner had seven tallies for Brevard (4-18, 0-14 SAC) as the Tornados fell in the season series to the Bears. Lindsay Rogers led four BC defensive players with 20 digs in the match, while Atkinson had a team high four blocks in the match.
Haley Rhyne and Kayla Morrow were each in double-digits in kills with 14 and 10 apiece, while Emily Culler led five L-R (16-9, 8-6 SAC) players with a match-high 27 digs to lead the Bears to their fifth consecutive win.
Lenoir-Rhyne used a 9-1 run to take advantage of the first set of the match, going up 19-9 following a BC attack error. The Tornados battled back behind a Conner kill and a service ace by Lindsay Rogers, but Christenbury closed out the 25-14 set victory with a kill off the assist from Kaitlyn Burton.
The Tornados jumped ahead in the second set on Rogers’ serve, going up 8-1 following a Morrison kill. Lenoir-Rhyne came back to tie the match up at 21 apiece, but a Rollins service ace extended the Tornados lead back to two and BC closed out the set 25-23 to tie the match up at 1 apiece.
Brevard held the 19-16 advantage in the third set after kills by Rollins and Joy Oswalt, but Lenoir-Rhyne tied the match up at 20 and a pair of Christenbury kills gave L-R the momentum to close out the victory, 25-21.
The Tornados against built a lead in the fourth set, going up 10-6 after a kill by Conner, but the Bears continued to fight back, tying the match up at 16 apiece following a Christenbury point. The score went back an forth until a kill by Chelsea Hill paved way to a 24-20 advantage and Rhyne closed out the win with a kill off the assist from Meredith Lutz.
Brevard returns home to Boshamer Gymnasium as they host Converse and Johnson C. Smith for a tri-match on Saturday, October 22nd. The Tornados will take on the Valkyries at 11 a.m., while Converse will battle the Golden Bulls at 1 p.m. Brevard will take on Johnson C. Smith in the final contest, scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
