Hickory, N.C. - Scott Schuurman placed in a second half goal to pace the Tornados offense against Lenoir-Rhyne on Monday evening, but a pair of scores off the foot of Jordan Holmes led the Bears as Brevard fell in conference action, 4-1.
Joe Green and Garrett Stone started the action for both teams, recording shots in the first eight minutes of the match, and Stone recorded the first shot on goal for Brevard (3-12-1, 1-7 SAC), but Lenoir-Rhyne (7-8-1, 3-4 SAC) goalkeeper Stefan Dill blocked the shot to keep the shutout intact.
Zach Charles started the scoring in the match at the 25:03 mark, collecting the pass from Sean Rogers at the top of the box and placing his shot in the net to put the score at 1-0.
Shots from Tommi Rasinmaki and Jami Uttuu both were off target as the Tornados attempted to even the match, but Holmes connected at the 40:19 mark for the Bears, heading the ball into the net after the long cross from Daniel Jones to put Lenoir-Rhyne up 2-0.
Tom Holland and Holmes added goals in the first six minutes of the second half to expand the lead for the Bears, but the Tornados continued to battle back as Paulo Silva and Uttuu launched shots to keep Brevard in contention.
Schuurman cracked the seal on the goal for Brevard at the 72:28 mark as the senior from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada headed in the ball off the cross from Uttuu for his first score on the season, cutting the lead to 4-1.
Rasinmaki, Alec Darcy and Anthony Cardenas all recorded shots in the closing minutes as the Tornados fought to get back within striking distance, but the comeback fell short as Brevard dropped the match to the Bears, 4-1.
Brevard returns home as they welcome Catawba College to Senior Day at the BC Soccer Field on Saturday, October 29th. The Tornados will celebrate with seniors Schuurman, Cardenas and Thomas Kombol, before taking on the Indians at 4 p.m.
