Angel Fire, N.M. - The Tornados closed out the 2011 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships on Sunday morning, taking on the treacherous Dual Slalom Course and Kate Weisenfluh again found precious metal, taking bronze in the Women’s event as Brevard finished up the weekend at the Angel Fire Bike Park.
Brevard rallied over the final day, improving by two spots on the team omnium as the Tornados finished sixth overall in the standings, recording 357 points. Union College ended the Brevard reign, finishing on top to take the 2011 National Championship.
The quarter-mile course was frozen over in the morning, but as the riders took the course and the sun warmed up, mud became an issue for the cyclists as it caked the bikes as they went around the track.
Weisenfluh topped off her spectacular 2011 season finishing the course third overall to receive the bronze medal and her team-leading second podium finish on the weekend, while Morgan Sykes was unable to finish on the course.
On the men’s side, the Tornados had their strongest finish of the weekend as Thomas Bagnal and Mac Banner both finished in the top 10, with Bagnal placing seventh and Banner eighth to pace the BC men. Trey Cassell finished four spots back in 12th overall, while Asher Blackmore took 23rd as the BC men took the second most points overall on the day, recording 83 points to the team omnium standings. Kody Adams, like Sykes, was unable to finish to round out the group in their first national event under Coach Brian Sheedy.
Brevard returns home and will start preparations for the 2012 Road portion of the cycling season, with the first event yet to be set on the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference calendar.
