Brevard, N.C. - Madison Hill of the Women’s Cross Country team and Prince Simunyu of the Football team have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of October, as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Hill was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Ashlie Morrison of the Volleyball team and Bailey Varley of the Women’s Soccer team.
Hill became the third BC Women’s Cross Country runner in program history to earn All-South Atlantic Conference First Team honors when she placed in the top seven at the 2011 Food Lion SAC Cross Country Championships. The freshman from Parkersburg, W. Va. took fourth in the event and her finish was tops among freshman in the race, taking SAC Freshman of the Year honors after crossing the line in 19:38. Hill also led the Tornados to a sixth place finish at the Furman Invitational in the month of October, placing second among all Division II runners in the race. She will be leading the Tornados in the NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday, November 5th in Charlotte, N.C.
Simunyu was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Kim Koivu of the Men’s Golf team, Felipe Mendonca of the Men’s Soccer team and Josh Mower of the Men’s Cross Country team.
Simunyu continued his SAC-leading 2011 season as the senior from Wake Forest, N.C. led the Tornados and the South Atlantic Conference with 51 tackles on the month of October, averaging 10.2 tackles per game and is currently tied for the SAC lead with 88 tackles, sitting in the top 20 in the nation on the season. He recorded three games with at least 10 tackles in the month of October, including a season high 14 against North Greenville and added a pair of tackles behind the line of scrimmage, as well as a sack. Simunyu will be recognized with the Brevard College football seniors during the Senior Day festivities on Saturday, November 5th at Brevard Memorial Stadium.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2010-2011 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
