Mount Olive, N.C. - Gaither Hendrix scored a season high 27 points and Darius Moose and Drew Schauss were again in double figures, but Craig Hayes led four Trojans in double-digits as Brevard fell in the first round of the Mount Olive Pickle Classic to host Mount Olive, 100-78.
Jordan McCain led the Trojans (3-0) with 14 points in the first half as Mount Olive held a 53-39 halftime lead over the Tornados (0-4), but Hendrix continued to bring the fight in the second half, scoring 14 points and going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line as Brevard connected on 83.3 percent of their attempts in their second half comeback attempt.
Hendrix led all players with 27 points, hitting all eight free throw attempts, as well as 9-for-17 from the floor as Brevard hit a season high 53.1 percent (26-49) from the floor. Moose added 14 points and a pair of assists, while Schauss scored 14 points off the bench, hitting two three-pointers in the loss.
Hayes led Mount Olive with a team high 17 points, going 7-for-8 from the floor, while McCain used his second half scoring surge to add 16 as the Trojans improve to 3-0 on the season. Mahamed Ibrahim and Darrell Patterson both scored 15 points apiece in the contest, while Kason Cheeks added nine points and a game high 13 rebounds to pace the Trojans in the win.
For the fourth game this season, the Tornados were on the board first as Aleksandar Vasiljevic hit an early jumper off the assist from Moose, but Hayes followed with a layup as Mount Olive opened the game with 15 of the first 21 points.
The Tornados cut into the lead with a pair of three-pointers by Schauss, but Mount Olive took control late in the half after a McCain three-pointer put the Trojans up 51-28 with 3:13 to play in the opening half. Brevard closed out the half on a 6-2 run from the free throw line as Hendrix scored four points and Jermichael Tanner and Michael Gist both hit free throws, but Patterson hit a jumper to send the teams into the break with the score at 53-34.
Brevard continued their run in the second half as Gist scored the first four points of the half as the Tornados cut the lead down to 60-46 with 16:04 on the clock following a layup by Vasiljevic.
Mount Olive followed with a 25-6 run spanning the next six minutes to go up 35 with 8:49 to play and the Trojans held on after a late surge to close out the game with the 100-78 victory.
Brevard remains in Mount Olive, N.C. as they take on Barton College tomorrow afternoon in Kornegay Arena to close out the Mount Olive Pickle Classic. Tipoff for the game between the Tornados and the Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m.
