Brevard falls in non-conference action to Mount Olive, 70-66

Brevard, N.C. - Anna Schlobohm led four Tornados with 19 points and added six rebounds, but 20 points by Mount Olive’s Andrea Jones and a 53-34 advantage on the boards helped the Trojans as Brevard fell on Monday evening in Boshamer Gymnasium, 70-66.

Mount Olive (3-1) outscored Brevard (4-1) 10-6 over the final three minutes of the game, going 5-for-6 from the free throw line over the final 49 seconds and three-point attempts by Holli Flippo, Schlobohm, Alyssa Cutshaw and Lindsay Brendle fell short as the Tornados fall for the first time this season.

Schlobohm was 8-for-19 from the field for Brevard as the Tornados shot 32.3 percent (21-65) from the floor in the game. Brendle added 14 points, going 6-for-9 from the free throw line, while Micheala Watkins had 12 points, four assists and four rebounds to go with three steals. Flippo added 10 points and a team high seven rebounds from the floor as the Tornados suffer their first loss in the 2011-2012 season.

Jones led all scorers with 20 points, hitting four three-pointers, while Jasmine McDonald added 15 points and nine rebounds, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Alyssa Luebs picked up the double-double down low for the Trojans with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Tamara Nesmith added 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

An 8-0 run gave the Tornados the 14-6 lead at the 16:06 mark after Schlobohm’s layup, but Mount Olive battled back, tying the score up at 20 apiece at the 6:20 mark on a three-pointer by Jones.

The three-pointer came during a 20-2 run by the Trojans as they went up 33-22 with 1:49 remaining in the half on another Jones’ trey. A pair of free throws by Taylor Hiatt cut the lead back to within single digits, but Nesmith hit the back end of a pair of free throws to give Mount Olive the 34-24 advantage heading into the break.

A layup by Brendle at the 7:43 mark tied the game up for the fifth time in the contest at 51 apiece. The teams traded points over the next five minutes, tying five times and swapping the lead twice before a pair of Brendle free throws gave the Tornados the 61-60 advantage with 2:59 to play.

A three-pointer from the top of the key by Jones gave Mount Olive the 63-61 lead and the Trojans pressed the advantage to six following a layup by Luebs and a pair of McDonald free throws. Flippo answered with a pair from the charity stripe, but McDonald and Nesmith closed out the game, hitting three free throws in the final 26 seconds and three-point attempts by Cutshaw, Schlobohm, Brendle and Flippo failed to connect as the Tornados fell in non-conference action, 70-64.

Brevard remains at home as they open South Atlantic Conference play in Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday, November 30th against Anderson University. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Trojans is set for 6 p.m.
