Brevard, N.C. - Micheala Watkins of the Women’s Basketball team and Aaron Reese of the Football team have been named the Sports Spot Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of November, as recognized on WSQL 1240 AM on Wednesday afternoon. The award is presented by Sports Spot, in conjunction with the Brevard College Athletic Department.
Watkins was voted the Female Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Ashlie Morrison of the Volleyball team and Angela Canale of the Cross Country team.
Watkins wins the award for the second time in her career, having received Athlete of the Month honors in January 2011. For the month of November, Watkins led the team in averaging 14.3 points per game and added a team high 24 steals in pacing the Tornados to a 4-2 start to the season. She scored double figures in all six games in the month and added two games with at least six rebounds, three games with at least four assists and three games with at least three steals. Watkins recorded her best game of the season on November 26th against Tennessee Wesleyan when the junior guard scored 17 points, shooting 58.3 percent from the floor, and added six rebounds, four assists and two steals in the 85-65 victory.
Reese was voted the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Month by the BC Head Coaching staff over fellow nominees Gaither Hendrix of the Men’s Basketball team and Josh Mower of the Men’s Cross Country team.
Reese led the Tornados football team in their final two games of the season, leading the offense with 213 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns, while completing 53.1 percent of his passes for 190 yards and a pair of scores against Catawba and Newberry. Reese had 17 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown against Catawba, going 7-for-13 through the air for 101 yards and a score, and continued his success against Newberry, picking up 138 rushing yards and 89 passing yards to go with three total touchdowns against the Wolves. Reese finished fifth in the SAC in rushing yards per game and rushing touchdowns and averaged 82.2 passing yards per game, finishing third in the SAC with 10 touchdown passes on the season.
These two athletes will be presented with action shots recognizing their award, which will be displayed in the lobby of Boshamer Gymnasium for the entire school year. A total of eight female and male Sports Spot Athletes of the Month will be selected in the 2010-2011 academic year. The award is selected from qualified candidates each month by the athletic department staff.
