Brevard, N.C. - The Chick Martin Court Dedication and the SAC Football Awards are part of the attraction in Boshamer Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon as the Brevard College men’s and women’s basketball teams host Wingate University at 2 and 4 p.m.
The BC women’s basketball team, led by Coach Shannon Reid, will take on the visiting Wingate Bulldogs at 2 p.m. to start off the action in Boshamer. Senior guard Anna Schlobohm sits only six points away from 1,000 career points, while Lindsay Brendle is coming off three consecutive 20-point games as the Tornados look to take down the visiting Bulldogs led by the talented trio of Nikki Burton, Kurie Washington and Janitsha Williams.
In-between basketball games, Dr. David Joyce, Athletic Director Juan Mascaro and Tornado Club President Ken Kolb will take the court as Brevard College honors Leighton "Chick" Martin, retired coach, teacher and mentor to student-athletes at Brevard for almost two decades, by naming the court in his honor.
Following the dedication, while the men’s basketball teams take the court for their pregame warm-ups, the Tornado Club will host their hospitality room in the Auxiliary Gymnasium. The hospitality room will serve as a reception for Chick Martin, welcoming special guests to join the Tornado Club members, with finger foods and snacks provided by The Sunrise Café.
The men’s basketball team tips off at 4 p.m. against Wingate University in a rematch of their 2011 Food Lion SAC Quarterfinal game held in Wingate, N.C. on March 2, 2011. Gaither Hendrix leads the Tornados and is fifth in the SAC in scoring with 17.2 points per game to pace the Brevard offense, which looks to bounce back from a setback Wednesday against Lincoln Memorial against the Bulldogs (9-8, 5-2 SAC).
During the men’s halftime, the BC football team takes center stage as South Atlantic Conference Commissioner Patrick Britz and Brevard Athletic Director Juan Mascaro, in conjunction with Coach Paul Hamilton, present the 2011 SAC Football awards to the Tornados seniors and All-Conference selections.
The festivities begin at 2 p.m. in Boshamer Gymnasium with the tipoff of the women’s basketball game.
