Hendrix, Moose score double-digits in loss to Wingate

Brevard, N.C. - Gaither Hendrix scored 15 points and Darius Moose added 10 as the Tornados built a halftime lead over the visiting Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Boshamer Gymnasium. A balanced offensive attack in the second half by the Bulldogs behind 10 points by Odell Turner led the Wingate comeback as Brevard fell to the visiting Bulldogs, 61-57.

Brevard (2-15, 1-7 SAC) led by as many as 17 points in the first half as Darius Moose and Jermichael Tanner led the Tornados offense as Brevard shot 52.0 percent (13-25) in the opening 20 minutes, but Wingate (10-8, 6-2 SAC) opened the second half on a 28-11 run to tie the game up at 47 apiece and Eddie Lewis drained a three-pointer with 14 ticks remaining in the game as the Bulldogs pulled off the comeback in Boshamer.

Hendrix led all scorers with 15 points as the Tornados shot 47.8 percent (22-46) from the floor in the contest. Moose added 10 points and six rebounds, while Tanner added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor in the loss.

Turner, Paidrick Matilus and Jaime Vaughn led a balanced Wingate attack with 12 points apiece as Wingate had 11 players score in the contest. The Bulldogs shot 64.0 percent (16-25) from the floor in the second half to record their fourth consecutive victory over the Tornados.

Dominique Pickett hit his first two three-point attempts to open the scoring in the game as Brevard raced out to a 10-2 lead in the first three minutes of the contest. Wingate rallied back to take a one-point lead at 11-10 on a layup by Turner at the 14:29 mark, but a Hendrix jump shot two possessions later swung the advantage back to the Tornados.

Hendrix’s jumper sparked a 15-4 run capped by back-to-back three-pointer by Tanner and Ryson Felder as the Tornados went up 27-15 with 5:53 remaining in the first period. A layup by Mike Tyson with 3:18 to go brought the Bulldogs back within single digits at 27-18, but Brevard closed out the half with a 9-1 run, taking their largest lead of the game at 36-19 on a Hendrix jumper in the paint to head into the halftime break with the lead.

The Bulldogs jumped out the half with a 12-4 run to cut the lead back to within single digits again at the 16:44 mark as Matilus ran off six consecutive points for the Bulldogs to put the score at 40-31. The run continued as the Bulldogs brought the game back to within one possession on a jumper by Turner at the 13:47 mark to put the score at 41-38.

Baskets by Filip Gujanicic, Tanner and Hendrix kept the Tornados ahead for the next five minutes, but Lewis knotted the game up for the first time, hitting a free throw at the 8:48 mark to tie the score up at 47 apiece.

The teams would keep the score close the remainder of the contest, with Hendrix tying the game up for the fourth time in the second half with a jumper at the 1:29 mark to put the score at 57-57. Turner answered from the free throw line with a free throw to give the Bulldogs the lead and following a Hendrix miss, Lewis drained a three-pointer from the left corner with 14 seconds remaining as the Bulldogs escaped Brevard with the 61-57 victory.

Brevard returns to the road as they close out their first trip through the South Atlantic Conference on Wednesday, January 25th, as they travel to Newberry, S.C. to take on Newberry College. Tipoff between the Tornados and the Wolves in Eleazer Arena is set for 8 p.m.
