Brevard, N.C. - The Brevard College Men’s soccer team fell to Queens University of Charlotte in a windy, foul-marred game, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Brevard. For the season, Queens goes to 6-2-1, while the Tornados fall to 2-8-1, 0-4 SAC.
Defense was the story throughout the first half as neither team was able to get the ball past the backline. Brevard had several early scoring opportunities go to naught as they were unable to slip a shot on goal past the Royals defense. At the half, the teams had combined for a total of four shots with Brevard’s Jerry Hatsady facing three shots and saving the two shots on goal and Queens’ Dan Williams not having to make a save in the first half.
Queens College took control in the 54th minute when Adrian Faz fired at shot at Hatsady who tipped the ball up in the air. As he went up to grab it, Queens’ Heath Cox came out of nowhere to head it past Hatsady, into the goal to put the Royals up, 1-0.
The teams traded shots until the 67th minute when, after a foul by Queens’, Jussi Halonen placed the free kick from 25 yards past the defensive lines, rolling into the back right corner of the net to even the score at 1.
Brevard had a chance in the 72nd minute when Ian Townson’s cross led Ryan Ayres into the goal box for a one-on-one with Williams. However the opportunity failed as Ayres was unable to slip the ball past the keeper.
The Royals had an opportunity of their own when Kevin O’Donnell tried to one-time a shot; however, his shot hit the crossbar and came back into play and was cleared by the Tornados.
Heath Cox put the Royals up for good with his second goal of the game, this one coming in the 87th minute as his shot deflected off a Brevard defender. The ball sailed over the outstretched hands of a leaping Hatsady into the top right corner of the net putting Queens up for good, 2-1.
The physical play on both sides was evident by the total of fouls in the game. There was a total of 32 fouls called in the game, as well as a total of nine cards issued, seven of which went to the Tornados including Scott Schuurman’s double-yellow.
The Tornados are back in action on Tuesday, October 7, when they head to Dahlonega, Ga. to take on North Georgia College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Queens heads home to Charlotte where they host Belmont Abbey College on the 7th with a start time of 7:30 p.m.
