Greenwood, S.C. - Champ Stuart drilled a two run double in the eighth inning for the Tornados, but behind a strong pitching performance by Brandon Miller, the Bearcats plated multiple runs in four different innings as Lander held off the visiting Brevard on Tuesday evening in Dolny Stadium, 13-3.
Casey Smith (0-1) suffers the lost in his first appearance on the season for the Tornados (4-6), while Miller (2-0) helped Lander (8-4) to the victory, throwing five innings, retiring eight on strikes in the win.
Lander plated 13 runs in a four inning stretch, spanning the third to the sixth inning led by a four RBI performance by A.J. Nunziato, while Colby Painter scored four times during the stretch to provide the Bearcats all the runs they would need in the contest.
Brevard broke the shutout in the top of the fifth as Randy O’Dell singled home Queen with two outs. Stuart did the damage for the Tornados in the eighth inning, doubling off Lander reliever Ben Runyon scoring John Slade and Whit Bowen to provide the remaining runs for the Tornados in the game.
Brevard remains on the road as they continue non-conference action on Wednesday, February 22nd as the Tornados travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on Limestone College. First pitch between the Tornados and the Saints is set for 2 p.m.
