Gaffney, S.C. - A pair of home runs led host Limestone past visiting Brevard on Wednesday afternoon, spoiling a dominant start by Zach Joyce as the Tornados fell on the road at Bob Prevatte Field, 6-1.
Joyce took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year despite a strong outing as he struck out five while allowing a pair of runs on three hits and two walks in six innings of work. Cody Queen led Brevard at the plate with an RBI single while Champ Stuart scored the lone BC run in the contest.
Zach Howard opened the scoring for the Saints (5-6) in the bottom of the second, following Josh Lyon’s walk by driving a ball over the left field fence to put Limestone up 2-0.
Brevard (4-7) touched Limestone starter Zach Lucas in the fifth inning, recording three consecutive two-out singles as Stuart, Eric Renegar and Queen recorded base hits with the final bringing in Stuart to cut the lead in half.
Limestone put the game out of reach in the home half of eighth after a single by Casey Seay put runners on the corners with one out and Lyon coming to bat. Lyon powered the Saints out to a comfortable 6-1 cushion with a three-run blast over the centerfield fence to put the game out of reach in favor of Limestone.
Brevard returns home to Gil Coan Field on Friday, February 17th as the Tornados welcome Lenoir-Rhyne for the start of a three-game South Atlantic Conference series. First pitch in the opening nine-inning contest between the Tornados and the Bears is set for 2 p.m.
