Wingate, N.C. - Aleksandar Vasiljevic led the Tornados with 17 points and Gaither Hendrix was in double figures in his final collegiate contest, but Wingate raced to a 10 point lead at the half and pulled away in the second half as Brevard fell to the Bulldogs in Cuddy Arena on Saturday afternoon, 86-53.
Vasiljevic led Brevard (5-23, 4-14 SAC) with 17 points on the afternoon, narrowly missing out on the double-double with nine rebounds to pace the Tornados offense in the contest. Hendrix added 16 points, hitting three three-pointers in the loss, while Jermichael Tanner and Michael Gist combined for 10 points and four rebounds in their final contest wearing the blue and black of Brevard.
Jaime Vaughn led all players with 22 points as Wingate (17-11, 13-5 SAC) clinched the third seed in next week’s Food Lion South Atlantic Conference basketball tournament. Chase Smith added 15 points, while Paidrick Matilus scored 10 points as Wingate completed the season sweep against Brevard.
The Bulldogs opened up the scoring in the contest as Deion Turman drove in for the layup, but Brevard took the early lead as Hendrix and Vasiljevic scored the first seven points for the Tornados in going up 7-4 with 15:18 on the clock. Brevard retained the lead for the following three minutes as Gist connected on a jumper, but Matilus drained a three-pointer to tie the contest with 13:41 remaining in the period.
Wingate retained the lead for the remainder of the half, building a 10 point lead just before the half as Robert Carpenter connected on a three-pointer to send the Bulldogs into the halftime break with the 38-28 lead.
The Bulldogs would go up by as many as 36 in the second half in closing out the victory over the Tornados, 86-53.
