Swannanoa, N.C. - The Brevard College women’s soccer team shot early and often in their game Saturday against host Warren Wilson College and they came away with the victory over the Owls, 3-0.
For the season the Tornados improve to 5-8, 0-4 in the SAC, while Warren Wilson falls to 2-4-2.
Less than two minutes into the game Bailey Varley put the Tornados up 1-0 on the first shot of the game, sneaking the ball past keeper Rachel Schonberg.
Varley scored again in the 28th minute as she received a pass from teammate Chelsea Freeman and hammered home the ball, increasing the lead to 2-0.
With 30 seconds left in the first half Cherie Haseltine added to the scoring as she placed her second goal of the season in the net to give the Tornados a commanding 3-0 lead.
The first half was all Tornados as they totaled 15 shots to the Owls one. Tornados keeper Sydney Douglas did not face a shot on goal in the first half, while her counterpart Schonberg saved eight of the 11 Tornado shots on goal.
The second half was more even as Brevard only attempted six shots on goal, while Warren Wilson attempted three. Two of the Owls shots were saved by Douglas, and the other shot was saved by her replacement Jordan Box.
For the game, Varley took over the overall team lead in goals scored, with five for the season. Douglas and Box combined in the goalbox to give the Tornados their third shutout of the season.
The Tornados are back in action on Wednesday, October 8th, when they host Wingate University at the Brevard Soccer Field. Kickoff time is 4 p.m. Warren Wilson plays on October 10th when they host North Greenville University with a start time at 4 p.m.
