RUNNIN' BULLDOGS DOWN TORNADOS AT MCCOY TENNIS COMPLEX

Brevard falls in match against NCAA Division I opponent

Brevard, N.C. - Sam MacNeil and Beau Wills took their singles opponents to the limit, but Roman Piftor and Ernest Alberch were able to pull out the victories as the Tornados fell to visiting Gardner-Webb on Thursday afternoon.

Brevard falls to 2-3 on the season, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs improve to 4-7.

GWU took all three doubles matches to take the first point of the match. Brendan Dempsey and Joao Poli topped Jonathon Lavelle and George Finch on court on. 3, winning 8-1, while Matthew Parker and Alberch defeated Rory Northam and Stefano Giovanolli on court no. 2, 8-2. Korhan Ates and Adam Knutsson-Sundblad completed the doubles sweep, downing Wills and MacNeil, 8-3.

Gardner-Webb took the matches on courts 3, 4, 5 and 6 in straight sets to take the victory, while Alberch and Wills battled on court no. 2, with Alberch earning the 6-3, 6-4 win. MacNeil took Piftor to a third set, winning the opening set 6-4, but Piftor came back to record the win, evening the match with a 6-3 victory and winning the tiebreaker in the final set, 10-6.

Brevard returns to the road as they travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C. for their annual Spring Break trip. Action on Spring Break for the Tornados begins on Sunday, March 4th against St. Joseph’s.
