DOUBLES DEFICIT TOO GREAT TO OVERCOME AS OILERS DOWN TORNADOS

Brevard rallies back with four singles victories in loss to Findlay

Hilton Head, S.C. - The Tornados bounced back after dropping all three doubles matches to knot the score up at 4 apiece as Sam MacNeil, Beau Wills, Rory Northam and Rob Havens all recorded singles victories, but the deficit proved to be too great to overcome as Findlay topped Brevard on Friday morning, 5-4.

Brevard falls to 6-5 with the loss, while the Oilers improve to 5-2 on the season.

Kyle Collette and Dawid Hebda opened the scoring in doubles play, topping MacNeil and Wills on court no. 1, 8-6, while Connor Majdalani and Josh Smedley finished shortly after with a matching 8-6 win on court no. 2 over Northam and Jonathon Lavelle. Yashwant Pulumati and Matt Smith closed out the Oilers’ sweep with a hard-fought 9-8 (8-6) victory on court no. 3, topping Stefano Giovanolli and George Finch to complete the sweep.

The Tornados came roaring back in singles play as Wills put the first point on the board for Brevard with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pulumati on court no. 2 to start the Brevard comeback. MacNeil continued to remain undefeated in singles action in Hilton Head, topping Collette on court no. 1 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Smedley put Findlay within one point of the overall win, topping Giovanolli on court no. 4, 6-1, 6-1 to give the Oilers the 4-2 advantage, but Northam came bouncing back for Brevard as the freshman from Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa topped Hebda on court no. 3, 7-5, 6-2.

Havens followed 10 minutes later with the evening score, completing a comeback after dropping the first set 6-1. Havens fought back to tie the match up with a 7-6 victory in the second set, before taking the tiebreaker in the third frame, winning 10-5 to set the Tornados up with a chance to win the match.

Smith took the first set on court no. 5 for the Oilers, 6-2, but Finch battled back to even the match with a 6-4 victory in set two. However, Smith outlasted Finch in the tiebreaker, closing out the win with an 11-9 victory to give Findlay the victory.

Brevard stays on the road as the Tornados open South Atlantic Conference play on Monday, March 12th as the Tornados travel to Harrogate, Tenn. to take on Lincoln Memorial. First serve in doubles play between the Tornados and the Railsplitters is set for 2 p.m.
