Football linebacker Stanley Jones has been named Tornado Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week by visitors of BCTornados.com. Jones earned 24 of the 69 votes, or 34.8%, edging women's soccer forward Bailey Varley by just three votes.
Jones paced the defensive effort in Saturday's 44-13 loss to No. 18 Wingate. The Spartanburg, S.C. native filled up the stat sheet, tallying 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a sack and an interception, which he returned 37 yards in the first quarter. On the season, Jones has 54 total tackles, tied for most in the South Atlantic Conference with Mars Hill's Zach Johnson. Jones' 10.8 tackles per game leads the SAC and is the 11th-highest average in the nation.
Jones is the first multiple-time winner of the TAW award. The Sparkle City defender also was named the Week 6 TAW after his 21-tackle performance against Lenoir-Rhyne.
The Tornado Athlete of the Week is determined by a fan poll on the frontpage of BCTornados.com. Candidates for the Tornado Athlete of the Week award are announced and voting opens every Saturday night at 10 p.m. Voting closes on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m.
