Dahlonega, Ga. - The Brevard College men’s soccer team traveled to Dahlonega, Ga. and emerged victorious as the visiting Tornados topped host North Georgia College and State in a Tuesday afternoon match, 2-1.
With the win, the Tornados improve to 3-9-1, 0-5 in SAC play, while the Saints fall to 5-8 for the year.
The Tornados struck in the 17th minute as Henri Erti found the back of the net off the pass by Jussi Halonen to give Brevard a quick 1-0 lead.
The Saints responded quickly, as less than 30 seconds later, Terry Gibbs put a shot past goalkeeper Jerry Hatsady off the assist from Bradley Rose to tie the game at 1-1.
The teams would remain scoreless throughout the rest of the first half due to great play by goalkeepers Hatsady for Brevard and Rade Tanaskovic for North Georgia. For the half Hatsady faced eight Saints shots, and saved two of the three shots on goal. Tanaskovic faced five Tornado shots and saved three of the four shots on goal.
The teams were scoreless in the second half, with both teams taking multiple shots, until the 83rd minute when Halonen fired a shot past Tanaskovic, recording his third goal of the season and putting the Tornados up 2-1 with seven minutes to play.
The Saints had a final chance to tie the game, but Terry Gibbs shot on goal was saved by Hatsady, ending the final North Georgia threat to the game and clinching the Tornado victory.
For the game, Tanaskovic faced eight shots and made three saves in allowing the two Tornado goals. Hatsady faced 14 shots by the Saints and made five saves, only allowing one North Georgia shot to touch the net.
The Tornados are back in action on Saturday, October 11, when they host SAC opponent Wingate University on the Brevard Soccer Field with a start time of 4 p.m. North Georgia also takes to the field on the 11th as they host Clayton State University with a kickoff time of 3:30 p.m.
