Elizabethtown, N.C. - Kim Koivu leads the field at the Carolina Sands Intercollegiate hosted by UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon, overcoming rain in the morning to take a one stroke lead into the final round tomorrow as Brevard sits seventh overall among the 15 schools in the event.
Brevard is currently tied with Belmont Abbey College after the first round in the team totals with a 291, 3-over par and 14 strokes behind tournament leader and South Atlantic Conference opponent Wingate University.
Koivu recorded a 35 on the front nine and followed with a closing 31 strokes over the final nine holes to lead Wingate’s Clifford Blanquicet and Daniel Claytor by one stroke with a first round 66, 6-under par.
T.J. Hoard and Michael Stamper recorded matching 74 strokes to sit 2-over par after the first round, sitting in a tie for 34th overall, while Diego Ortiz is tied for 54th overall in the tournament with a first round 40-37 to sit 11 strokes behind the leader.
Thomas Rennie closed out the group Coach David Nelson put in the field with matching 39s on both the front and back nines to close out the round with a 78, tying for 59th overall.
The Tornados and the rest of the field will close out the two-day tournament tomorrow morning.
