BC outfielder becomes second Tornados player to earn conference recognition

Rock Hill, S.C. - For the second time this season Brevard College had a baseball player earn South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week honors as Champ Stuart earned the recognition from the conference office after his performances in the games from April 2 – 8.

Stuart hit .643 on the week and added a double, triple and home run and three stolen bases in leading the Tornados to a victory over Division I Gardner-Webb, as well as a three-game sweep over conference rival Wingate University as Brevard went 4-0 on the week.

The sophomore from Bimini, Bahamas, went 9-for-14 on the week and is currently on a 12 game hitting streak, raising his batting average nearly 70 points during the run to take the overall lead in the SAC batting race this week as he is hitting .449 on the season.

Stuart opened the week going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in Brevard’s 8-6 victory over Division I Gardner-Webb, the Tornados first victory over a DI opponent in school history.

He followed it up with a 7-for-10 performance over the weekend against Wingate, adding two walks to his total as the Bulldogs failed to keep the fleet-footed sophomore off the base paths as Brevard rose to third overall in the SAC rankings with one weekend to play. Stuart scored seven runs and drove in four, including a two-run blast in the final game of the weekend series as Brevard earned back-to-back SAC sweeps for the first time in program history.

For the season, Stuart leads the SAC in batting average (.449) and is the Tornados offensive leader in runs scored with 39 and stolen bases with 12 on the season.

Stuart joins freshman shortstop as the second BC player to earn SAC Player of the Week honors in the 2011-2012 season.
